Peace and Quiet

It is early Friday morning as I sit here looking outside while my coffee is brewing.  It appears that we will have another beautiful day here at the trailer and the weekend looks very promising with temperatures in the mid eighties.  This follows a couple of overcast days that produced some drizzle but not enough to make the current fire danger go away.

Wednesday afternoon I smelled smoke like brush burning.  I turned on the fire scanner that I have installed on my Android phone and listened to our local fire company as they worked a 20’ by 20’ brush fire just a quarter of a mile away from the park.  They were using two tenders to provide water since they were out of reach of any hydrants.  Shortly after I started to listen the dispatch called out a fully involved residential fire somewhere in Monroe, WA.  From the sound of the units responding the place was up a dirty driveway on a hillside and very hard to reach.  No hydrants brought the call for tenders to assist.  When dispatch told the commander that the first four tenders on the call list were unavailable he told her that they were in a “defensive posture.”  Another words keep the fire from spreading and let it burn.  Too bad someone’s house had to burn down for lack of water but that is what happens in this area so many times.  Just didn’t realize it was possible that close to a major town.

We haven’t done much since coming home from our long trip except continue to thank God we left the east coast when we did.  Weather conditions have not improved in many of the areas that we visited.  Flood and tornados are rampant.

I am planning another trip that will start in Washington State and travel up into Canada make a loop and come back via Montana and Idaho.  It is a 280-mile scenic trip that appears to be loaded with miles of natural wonders and small towns.  I am thinking late August, early September after we move back to the condo.

More On The Confederacy

A short time ago I wrote a blog concerning the removal of the Confederate Flag from history.  In that blog I wondered out loud where all of this upheaval over the original symbol of the Confederacy would end up.  Well I have to say, it isn’t good and it doesn’t appear to be over yet.

The South Carolina legislature voted to remove the flag from the state house and the governor signed the bill.  This morning in a ceremony at the capitol the flag was indeed removed.  I don’t totally disagree with the removal of the flag from the state house but I am not sure I agree with the reasons why.

Nine folks died in a church and look at the things that are coming about because of it.  The removal of the flag from the capitol; sales of the flag discontinued by major corporations; the consideration of the removal of confederate soldiers who are interred in public spaces, some even named after the interred; the removal of statues of Confederate officials and officers; TVLand removes the Dukes of Hazzard and the owner of the General Lee car used in that show vows to remove the Confederate Flag from the roof of the car and replace it with the Stars and Stripes.

Why now do we decide to make steps to right what we see as a failure of our history?  Why didn’t we do something before now in the name of all those who died during the Civil Rights area?  Are we doing the right thing?

The history of the United States of America is riddled with all kinds of bad experiences put upon folks to keep our way of life viable.  Our nation has had a history that isn’t too pretty no matter which of the decades you look at.  History is history.  How do you tell about the battle of Gettysburg without the Confederate Battle Flag?  Those at Gettysburg addressed the issue saying that the flag is part of their history and will remain.  These folks are right.

Economics

It seems that while I have been sleeping in the woods the stock market as taken a nose dive on news that China and Greece are having further economic issues.  Looking at the global economy one might think the future is dim, but wait.  Will the discovery of organic molecules on comet P67 turn us into a cosmic economy.  That is just too much data to consider.  Back to the woods with me.

Peace and Quiet Have Returned

The three day weekends can be difficult and loud in the park but not this past holiday.  While fireworks went off outside the park for a couple of hours it was very quiet the remainder of the time.  In fact, we suspect that because the actual holiday was on a Saturday most of our members just chose to stay home and not even come up for the weekend.  I am told there were around 6500 people in the park on Memorial Day but we were lucky to have 2500 this past weekend.  There are 1200 sites in the park so it was pretty obvious that many folks didn't show up.  Even 2500 can cause issues with traffic, dust, overloaded swimming pools and a little too much noise late into the evening.

But they have all left leaving the live-ins and the folks who are, like us, spending their summer here.  After dinner last night we went to the pool and bobbed around with some of the live-ins who use the facilities on a regular basis.  As I sit here this morning, it is once again quiet and peaceful with the birds chirping in the distance as the sun rises over the hills that surround the area.  Today is Taco Tuesday at La Hacienda in Gold Bar.

Safe And Sane

It certainly wasn't safe and sane here in the Gold Bar area of the Pacific Northwest.  While the city of Gold Bar outlawed fireworks within the city limits there is plenty of county land outside the city and there just aren't enough law enforcement officials to stop the annual explosion of fireworks.  Luckily there wasn't any damage done but you have to wonder how many times you can pull the genie out of the bottle before something bad happens.

I hope everyone had a safe Fourth of July.
